Frequently asked questions about data erasure
How does the data erasure work?
We collect the devices, count them at handover and record them on a pickup receipt – you keep a copy. We then erase every data carrier with certified erasure software according to BSI-GS or BSI-GSK and create an erasure certificate for every erasure.
Can SSDs be erased the same way as hard drives?
Not by simple overwriting: SSDs spread data internally across memory areas that overwriting does not reach. We therefore erase them with methods designed for flash memory. If an SSD cannot be fully erased – for example because it is defective – it is physically destroyed according to DIN 66399.
What does the erasure certificate show?
The erasure certificate shows the device, data carrier, serial number, erasure method and time. Whether you receive a certificate per device or a summary for the whole job is up to you.
Do I need to tell you beforehand whether devices contain data carriers?
No. We always assume they do. We only ask whether you want erasure or physical destruction. We record serial numbers ourselves during inspection – you do not need to send them in advance.
